FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

Thank you for your interest in the Royal Dog Chew products! Here we try to answer the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) related to our all-natural treats.

The Royal Dog Chew is an easy-to-digest and nutrient-balanced dog chew prepared from the traditional, artisan hard cheese of the Himalayans. Our chew is made from only 3 all-natural ingredients, milk from yaks and cows, salt and lime juice making them a healthier and safer alternative to rawhide chews. They are an excellent source of protein and contain:

  • NO lactose, gluten, grain (including corn, soy or wheat) or binding agents.
  • NO artificial colors, preservatives, flavors, chemicals, additives or rawhide.

The first 25% of all the processing behind the Royal Dog Chew is done by the local Himalayan farmers. After milking the yaks and cows, the following manufacturing process is completed using centuries-old traditional methods, utensils, and tools.

  • The milk is boiled for 4-5 hours and then poured into a traditional hand-cranked centrifuge barrel to extract most of the fat. The fat is then further boiled to prepare ghee, a type of local butter and sold as a separate commodity.
  • Once the fat-free milk has cooled down, every 100 gallons of milk is treated with lime juice (10 ml) and salt (10 mg). Triggered by the salt, the mild acid begins to coagulate the milk. Once coagulated, the solids are then separated using a burlap sack (another traditional process). The sack of solids is then washed several times with warm water to remove the whey (which contains most of the lactose), salt and lime juice.
  • The cheese is then wrapped in burlap sack – and depending on the temperature and humidity of the room – is pressed for 2-3 days forming soft cheese forms. Next, the soft cheese is placed over a fire where the smoke ferments it.
  • The soft cheese is then kneaded until well-blended and then cut by hand into appropriate sizes or molds of different sizes and shapes. The cheese is then sundried to the perfect hardness and texture (approximately 2-3 months).
  • Due to its traditional handmade process, each Royal Dog Chew may have a slightly different look or tint.

Absolutely! The Royal Dog Chew is an easy-to-digest and nutrient-balanced dog chew that offers the following benefits to your dog:

  • Improves overall oral health; teeth and gums.
  • Reduces bad breath.
  • Improves mental health and alleviates boredom.
  • Prevents behavioral problems such as chewing inappropriate objects.
  • Provides necessary protein, carbohydrates, and fats.

The Royal Dog Chew contains only 3 all-natural ingredients, milk from yaks and cows, salt and lime juice making them a healthy treat for your dog. Our chews come from Himalayan hard cheese made from the pure milk of yaks and cows living and grazing in high-altitude pastures of Nepal.

They contain:

  • NO lactose, gluten, grain (including corn, soy or wheat) or binding agents.
  • NO artificial colors, preservatives, flavors, chemicals, additives or rawhide.

In addition, in 2008, a team of researchers, led by Professor Brian McBride of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, concluded that yak cheese has 3 times more beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids than cheddar cheese.

All dogs require balanced nutrition to live a healthy and active life; whether it’s playing, growing, exercising, breeding or taking care of their puppies, proper canine nutrition is a must.

Without proper protein, dogs cannot survive; including 10 different amino acids which dogs cannot make on their own.

The Royal Dog Chews contain:

  • 52.8% crude protein with balanced amino acids;
  • 0.7–0.9% crude fat;
  • 10.2% (max) moisture;
  • 5.5–6.0% ash food; and
  • 30-32% of carbohydrates which are all essential to your dog’s overall health.

In addition, the hardness of our dog chews depends upon the percentage of water in the milk. Milk containing higher water content makes the chew soft, and milk containing lower water content makes the chew hard (which typically dogs love the most). Our Royal Dog Chews contain a maximum of 10.2% water content/moisture.

Our nutritious chews are something your dog can play with and chew all day. The chew stays resilient for hours, even for an entire day. It’s a healthy and safe way to occupy your dog and keep them from becoming bored and engaging in destructive behavior while satisfying their natural need to chew.

Absolutely, but we don’t recommend it because of its hardness. We eat our chews all the time! Yes, that’s right; we personally taste every batch ourselves! We believe if it’s not good enough for us, then it’s not good enough for your dog.

Our Royal Dog Chews do not have expiration dates. We are currently conducting research on the storage and shelf life of the product.

However, if you do notice any fibrous white, green or blue spots on the chew, throw it away or return it to us at the address at the bottom of this page and we will send you a fresh, new chew.

Chewing this treat requires time and softens with continuous chewing. (People in the Himalayans take several hours to completely chew this hard cheese.)

If the chew is too hard for your dog, dip it in a bowl of boiling water for 5-10 minutes to soften it. (If the chew is large, keep it in the boiling water for a few more minutes.) Once the chew is soft, you can cut it into smaller pieces. Make sure the chew is completely cooled off before giving it back to your dog. To get the original hardness back, let the chew dry for 24 hours.

The Royal Dog chew is the only dog treat available in the world which can be chewed either hard or soft.

Place it in the microwave for 40 seconds or until it puffs up again. Make sure it’s completely cooled down before giving it back to your dog (at least 2 minutes). If the piece is too small – and could pose a potential choking hazard to your dog – throw it out. Always supervise your dog while chewing smaller pieces and provide plenty of fresh water for them to drink.

The inability to properly digest fat is known as lactose intolerance and can exhibit as:

  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Large, pale, greasy stools (called steatorrhea; the excessive presence of fat in the stools)
  • Liver and gallbladder disease (due to fat malabsorption)
  • An intestinal infection (viral, bacterial or parasitic)

Lactose is a type of sugar. Not just one single sugar content, but two sugar molecules chemically linked together. In order for a dog to be able to properly digest milk, the lactose must first be broken into two basic, easy-to-absorb sugars with a special lactose-splitting enzyme produced by the dog’s body known as lactase. Without this enzyme, a dog cannot properly digest dairy products.

Usually, anything containing less than 2% lactose can be well-tolerated by most dogs. Our chews contain well below that percentage: 0.7–0.9% crude fat.

  • Always buy and feed the proper size chew for your dog. All our chew products are based on the dog’s size and their individual chewing habits.
  • Do not feed puppies the hard, large dog chew.
  • If the chew is too hard for your dog, dip it in a bowl of boiling water for 5-10 minutes to soften it. (If the chew is large, keep it in the boiling water for a few more minutes.) Once the chew is soft, you can cut it into smaller pieces. Make sure the chew is completely cooled off before giving it back to your dog.
  • If a small piece of the Royal Dog Chew is left, place it in the microwave for 40 seconds or until it puffs up again. Make sure it’s completely cooled down before giving it back to your dog (at least 2 minutes). If the piece is too small – and could pose a potential choking hazard to your dog – throw it out. Always supervise your dog while chewing smaller pieces and provide plenty of fresh water for them to drink.
  • Always provide plenty of fresh water for your dog to drink.
  • If you notice any fibrous white, green or blue spots on the chew, throw it away or return it to us for a fresh, new treat.

Yes! You can store the Royal Dog Chew for a long time after opening the original package. As long as the chew has not been chewed by your dog and kept away from moisture in a cool, dry place.

If your dog has not consumed the whole chew, you can store it after it is fully dried in a cool, dry place. After drying, wrap the Royal Dog Chew in a paper towel or dry cloth and put it back in the original package without closing to allow ventilation. If you do not have the original package, simply store the wrapped chew in a cool, dry place.

Never store brand-new, fresh chews with chews your dog has already begun chewing.

The Royal Dog chew is a treat and should never be substituted for your dog’s regular meals. It is not intended to be fed as a meal.
